The San Joaquin Valley Writing Project’s Invitational Leadership Institute for the Teaching of Writing invites teachers with at least three years of experience from diverse grade levels, school districts, and subject areas to apply for our 2026 cohort. This dynamic and collaborative institute offers educators the opportunities to explore and refine their writing instruction, engage with current research, and grow as both professional and personal writers in a supportive community.
Through hands-on learning, thoughtful discussion, and meaningful reflection, participants will deepen their practice while building lasting connections with fellow educators. Upon completing the ILI, participants become SJVWP Teacher Leaders (TLs), opening the door to exiting opportunities to present at conferences, lead professional development, join focused study groups, and collaborate on innovative projects with colleagues across the Valley and the State. Teachers will receive a stipend to honor their participation and completion of all institute requirements.
Application Information:
How to Apply
- Provide a cover page with your contact information: name, phone, email address, name of school, current grade level (TK-16) and subjects taught.
- Short Written Responses:
- Introduce your students. Who are they and why do they bring to your classroom. (Suggested length: 1 page)
- Describe a moment in your professional life when you tried something new or unconventional. What inspored you to take on this intellectual risk, and how did the experience – whether it succeeded or not – shape your approach to teaching, creativity, or collaboration? What might this anecdote suggest about your particular brand of curiosity, teaching, and engagement with the world? (Suggested length: 1-2 pages)
- Describe your self as a writer (i.e., your experiences, your joys, your hesitations). (Suggested length: half-page)
- Complete the online application form and upload all documents using the “Apply Here” link below.
